Marking
The first marker to score a response, whose mark may then be moderated or resolved against others.
In a multi-marker workflow, the provisional marker is the first person to score a candidate's response. Their mark is the starting point — it may be accepted as-is, or checked and adjusted by other roles before it becomes final.
Provisional marking is one of several roles Synap supports, alongside moderating, back-reading and escalation. Together with resolution rules, they let several markers contribute to a single, defensible final mark.

Moderating (marker role)
A marker who reviews and adjusts provisional marks to ensure fairness and consistency across an exam.
Resolution marking
The rule that combines several markers' scores into one final mark — for example by averaging or taking the highest.
