Marking

Escalation (marker role)

Routing a response to a senior marker when markers disagree or a case needs a final decision.

What is escalation marking?

Escalation is what happens when markers can't be reconciled automatically. If two markers disagree beyond an agreed threshold, or a response is genuinely borderline, it's escalated to a senior marker or panel to make the final call.

Escalation is the safety valve on a multi-marker workflow: most responses are settled by resolution rules, and only the genuinely contested ones are escalated for a human decision. Synap includes an escalation role alongside provisional, moderating and back-reading in its marking workflow.
