Marking

Moderating (marker role)

A marker who reviews and adjusts provisional marks to ensure fairness and consistency across an exam.

What is a moderating marker?

The moderating marker reviews the marks given by provisional markers to make sure they're fair and consistent — across different candidates and across different markers. Where a mark is out of line, the moderator can adjust it.

Moderation is a core part of quality assurance in high-stakes marking. It's how an organisation demonstrates that a cohort was marked to the same standard, and it works hand-in-hand with resolution rules and, where disagreements persist, escalation.
