Item banking

The disciplined practice of building, tagging, versioning and quality-assuring a bank of exam questions over time.

What is item banking?

Item banking is the professional discipline behind a good question bank. An item is a single question; item banking is how you build, organise and look after a large, trusted collection of them over time.

It covers tagging items by topic, skill and difficulty; versioning them as content changes; retiring or exposing items to protect exposure; and using question statistics to keep only the items that perform well. Done properly, item banking is what lets an organisation run comparable, standardised exams year after year.
