Taking an unproctored exam
Information for candidates
Most exams on Synap are unproctored: nothing to download or install, no recording — the exam simply runs in your web browser on your exam provider's portal.
What you need
- An up-to-date web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari).
- A stable internet connection.
- Your exam provider's unique portal link (it usually ends in .synap.ac, though some providers use their own web address) and your login details.
Before exam day
- Log in to your exam portal ahead of time to check your details and confirm you can access your account — reset your password there if you need to.
- Read your exam provider's instructions carefully: timing rules, permitted materials and what to do if something goes wrong are set by them, not by Synap.
On the day
Log in a little early, close other tabs and apps, and make sure your device is plugged in or well charged. If you lose connection briefly, don't panic — reload the page and continue; if problems persist, note the time and contact your exam provider as soon as possible.
Not sure whether your exam is proctored? Check your exam provider's instructions, or see our guides for Synoptic-proctored and Rosalyn-proctored exams.
