Exam security

Lockdown browser

A locked-down exam environment that restricts what a candidate can do on their device during an exam.

What is a lockdown browser?

A lockdown browser is a secured environment for sitting an exam. It runs the exam full-screen and restricts what a candidate can do on their device — blocking other applications and browser tabs, disabling copy-paste and keyboard shortcuts, and detecting attempts to switch away.

Lockdown is a key line of defence for a remote or on-site digital exam: it removes the easiest routes to cheating and keeps the candidate focused on the assessment. It works best combined with proctoring — human or automated supervision — so that behaviour is both restricted and monitored. See online proctoring.
