LMS (Learning Management System)

Software for delivering, tracking and administering courses and training — the system of record for learning.

What is an LMS?

An LMS — Learning Management System — is software for delivering and administering learning: enrolling learners, hosting courses and content, tracking completion, and reporting on progress. It's the traditional system of record for training and education, oriented around courses and compliance.

An LMS overlaps with, but isn't the same as, an LXP (which is more learner-driven) or a dedicated exam platform (which specialises in assessment). Systems often connect via LTI so learners move between them seamlessly. See Synap's online learning platform.
