Supporting a Quick Transition to Online Exams for Osteopathic Physicians
Providing quality medical education for its members, the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO) supports osteopathic physicians. Specifically, those who specialize in neuromusculoskeletal medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine.
The AAO needed an LMS solution at short notice that would allow them to deliver their NMM/OMM Resident exam online. Due to the disruptions caused by COVID-19, they were no longer able to deliver their exams in an exam hall and began looking for alternative exam delivery methods. In particular, the medical academy needed a platform that would convert their paper exam questions into an online exam with full proctoring and automated results.
After browsing through other products, AAO chose Synap “because of the individualized service, attention to detail, reasonable pricing, and high level of professionalism”. Synap’s “easy-to-use” interface was also a determining factor in the AAO’s decision to use the platform.
Synap worked closely with the AAO during the on-boarding process, ensuring our team was available throughout to help mitigate any issues that might arise. Aware of time constraints, the Synap team worked efficiently to get the AAO portal ready on time for the exam. We set up the proctoring software, Proctor Exam, with custom instructions, formatted the questions correctly and conducted rounds of testing before the actual exam.
With Synap LMS, the American Academy of Osteopathy were able to successfully deliver live, proctored exams to nearly 50 members within just 3 weeks from becoming our client. Providing a detailed report of student responses and scores, including a breakdown of performance by question, allowed the AAO to identify questions that students may have struggled with. The percentage of correct answers for each topic was reviewed by the AAO and used to inform the examiners which questions needed to be reviewed in post-exam moderation.
Without the ability to proctor, the exams wouldn’t have been able to take place this year because of COVID-19. Through our choice of proctoring service, the AAO could have confidence that their exams were being proctored effectively. For instance, a webcam ID check validated the student’s identity and recorded them throughout the test. In addition, the footage was examined with any issues being flagged and passed back to the AAO for review.
“Synap came to our rescue when we needed a platform for computer-based testing, with a short turnaround time. The representative assigned to us was outstanding and very thorough. She tailored the experience to our needs and stayed in regular contact, to help mitigate any issues. We are very impressed with Synap and hope to continue working with them for our annual testing needs.”– Dr. Lauren Noto-Bell, AAO Residency Program Director
With the initial setup of the platform complete and proven to be a success, the AAO can now rely on Synap to conduct their online exams when needed. “We are very impressed with Synap and hope to continue working with them for our annual testing needs”.
