# Engagement and progress

Engagement and Progress pages help you move from “has this student used Synap?” to “what have they completed and where might they need help?”

### Choose the right view

| Page             | Best used for                                    | Important limitation                                                  |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Overview         | Recent sessions and a quick activity check.      | A session does not prove that required work was completed.            |
| Attempts         | Individual Quiz, Collection and Exam attempts.   | Check the source, version and attempt status before comparing scores. |
| Progress tracker | Completion across supported learning content.    | Completion rules differ by content type.                              |
| Records          | Wider learning records associated with the user. | Some records can be entered manually or originate outside Synap.      |

### Investigating an individual student

Start with the date range and the content they were expected to access. Confirm that the student belonged to the correct User group at the relevant time, then check whether their activity should have created progress, an Attempt or a Record of learning.

A blank view does not always mean inactivity. It can also mean the student did not have access, the selected filters exclude the activity, the content records completion in a different way, or you are viewing the wrong Portal or Sub-portal.

### Reading progress carefully

The headline percentage is a summary of the underlying item states. Open the Progress tracker when a value looks unexpected. A student may have opened a Note but not satisfied its completion behaviour, submitted work that is waiting for review, or be using a different Course version from the one you expected.
