# Group directory and types

The Users directory is where you find existing User groups and create new ones.

Search by group name, add filters, change visible columns and switch between table and card views. Depending on configuration, the directory can show group type, Subportal, description, member count and update dates.

### Built-in and custom groups

| Kind          | Use it for                                                            |
| ------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Student       | The portal’s learner population                                       |
| Educator      | Staff who create or manage content within their Permissions           |
| Manager       | Broad operational management, apart from certain global actions       |
| Administrator | Full portal administration                                            |
| Marker        | Staff assigned to marking workflows                                   |
| Custom        | A class, intake, customer cohort, department or specialist staff team |

Choose the group type deliberately. A role group can affect capability and navigation; a custom group is normally the better choice for categorising people who retain the same basic role.
