# Adding and inviting users
The Add users workflow covers both people who already have a portal account and people who need one.
| Method | Use it when | What happens |
| ---------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| Select users | The accounts already exist | Selected accounts join the group immediately |
| Invite or add by email | People can receive and act on email | Existing accounts join; new people receive an invitation |
| Invite or add by CSV | You have a larger list or additional user data | Synap processes rows from a comma-separated values file |
| Generate accounts | Learners will not self-register by email | Synap creates accounts whose credentials you distribute |
Pending invites show people who have not yet completed the invitation. Use this view before sending duplicates or investigating why somebody cannot sign in.
For a CSV import, begin with a small representative file. Confirm the column headings, email and identifier format, Attribute mappings and resulting group membership before importing the full cohort.

Generated credentials provide access to learner accounts. Store and distribute them securely, and avoid sending a complete credential list through an unapproved channel.
