# Versions

Versions let you publish Course changes without assuming that every existing learner should have their work replaced.

### When a new version appears

Changes made to the Course can be prepared as a pending version. The Assignment’s Version management page lists published versions and identifies the active one. **Preview** shows the learner view before publication.

### Publication strategies

| Strategy      | Learners who receive the new version                   |
| ------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| New enrollees | Only people whose learner assignment is created later  |
| Not started   | New enrollees and existing learners who have not begun |
| Not completed | New enrollees and learners who have not completed      |
| Completed     | New enrollees and learners who have completed          |
| Passed        | New enrollees and learners whose outcome is Passed     |
| Failed        | New enrollees and learners whose outcome is Failed     |
| All           | Everybody, including active learners                   |

Moving an existing learner to a new Course version may remove some or all recorded progress because the set and order of items can change. Synap warns when the selected strategy has this consequence.

Use **New enrollees** when the change is not essential for learners already underway. Before selecting a broader strategy, compare the old and new Course, identify who will lose progress and decide how those learners will be informed.
