# Course access

Course access controls who can find and maintain the reusable Course. It is separate from the Assignment’s learner group.

### Two different questions

| Question                                                 | Controlled by                 |
| -------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------- |
| Which staff can view or edit this Course in the Library? | Course access and Permissions |
| Which learners receive this Course as tracked work?      | The Assignment’s User group   |

Sharing a Course with an Educator does not enrol their students. Likewise, a learner can receive an Assignment without being given access to the administrator-facing Course source.

Use the Course owner to make responsibility visible, and use access policies when a wider staff team needs to maintain it. In a Subportal setup, confirm that the Course belongs to the intended portal scope before building Assignments from it.

Before archiving or removing staff access to a Course, check for active Assignments and unpublished Course changes. Historical learner records should remain understandable even after the source is retired.
