Using the course builder, accessing items in the library and the different course item content types

Courses on Synap are used to deliver structured linear learning to your users. Use courses when you want to monitor a users item progress. Courses offer the most structured way of learning on Synap. Add quizzes, videos, presentations, documents, SCORM files, audio, surveys and embed content on through the course builder to create rich varied courses on Synap. All content that you upload to Synap will be stored in your library for future courses.

🚨 Once a course has been assigned, users will not see any changes you make to the source course unless you pull through a new version - Assignment versioning

🎨 Creating a course

Navigate to the course page from the main menu, and use the Create course button to make a new course.

On the course details page add in a title and cover (default portal cover will be used if left blank). You can add in a short and long description, that displays to students.

Save the course details and use the sub menu to go to Items and open the course builder

From the course builder there are 3 ways to add in content:

• Add existing content from the library
• Upload new content (a copy will be added to the library)
• Create authored content like quizzes, surveys and notes to add in

Add quizzes with pass marks

Quiz course items can have a passmark set which the user will have to reach before being able to complete the course item and progress to the next one. Note this is separate to any grades set at the quiz level.

Manual review

Adding a manual review to any item in a course will pass it back to the admins / managers / educators who need to pass or reject a review before the user can progress. Helpful for document upload types of courses.

Organise

Drag and drop the various course items to change the order. Create folders to add an additional layer of organising to your course.

Once folders are created, course items can be added to those folders whilst editing

Alternatively click the folders button and then Reorder items button to drag and drop to move items from one folder to another.

🏷 Custom labels

Use custom labels to change the default course item names in an assignment, ie if you have have a note that is actually a help guide you can rename it accordingly for your users.
